Gitksan Research Lab
Gitksan is an endangered Tsimshianic language spoken in Northern British Columbia. UBC’s Gitksan Research Group is actively engaged in analytical research, text collection, dictionary work, and the creation of pedagogical materials.
We conduct fieldwork with three speakers in Vancouver every week, and team members travel to Gitksan territory at least once a year. Our research projects span everything from phonetics to semantics.
On November 12, 2013, our National Treasure Barbara Harris was on Coop Radio talking about her language and teaching the interviewers how to pronounce some sounds. You can listen at this link, starting at minute 12:35: Coop Radio
On October 23, 2013, Andrei Anghelescu presented at the UBC Firetalk series about the Gitksan Research Lab.
In July 2013 most of our team members went on a trip to Gitksan territory. We met many wonderful and generous fluent speakers of the language. We also ate lots of good salmon! It was great to see the language being spoken in daily life
