Speech Sciences Program Descriptions

Major in Speech Sciences

Students majoring in Speech Sciences should be aware that North American graduate programs in Speech Pathology and Audiology have varying prerequisites and admission requirements. Students should investigate prospective graduate schools and consult the Linguistics Undergraduate Advisor early in their program. See The School of Audiology and Speech Sciences for the required prerequisites for the two-year Master’s program at UBC.

Students must take at least 51 credits (and no more than 60 credits) in Linguistics and related areas.

Required courses:

  • LING 200, 201, 209 and 222
  • PSYC 101 and 102
  • LING 333 and STAT 203
  • LING 300, 311, 313, 314
  • LING 447
  • LING 451 or 452
  • An additional 9 credits* from AUDI 402, AUDI 403; LING 300-level and higher; selected PSYC 300-level and higher. *Students intending to apply for admission to a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology should use these credits to meet admission eligibility requirements for specific programs they will be applying to.

Recommended courses: BIOL 155; LING 100*; MATH 002; PHYS 100 or 101; 341. (*Note: LING 100 and 101 are not for credit  toward an Honours, Major or Minor in Speech Sciences.)

Honours in Speech Sciences

Admission to the Honours program requires:

  • An overall average of 76% or higher on at least 33 credits including LING 200 and LING 201.
  • A final grade of at least 80% in each of LING 200 and in LING 201
  • Approval of the Undergraduate Advisor

Required courses:

  • LING 200, 201, 209 and 222
  • PSYC 101 and 102
  • LING 333 and STAT 203
  • LING 300, 311, 313 and 314
  • LING 447
  • LING 449 (Honours Essay)
  • LING 451 or 452
  • An additional 24 credits from AUDI 402 and 403; LING 300-level and higher; selected PSYC 300-level and higher

Students must take at least 69 credits (and no more than 72 credits) in Linguistics and related areas.

Minor in Speech Sciences

Students must take at least 36 credits in Linguistics and related areas, subject to the following requirements:

  • LING 200, 201, 209 and 222
  • PSYC 101 and 102
  • LING 313 and 314
  • LING 300 or 311
  • An additional 6 credits from AUDI 402, LING 451 or 452
  • An additional 6 credits from AUDI 403; LING 300-level and higher; selected PSYC 300-level and higher.

Recommended courses: LING 100*; PSYC 207 and 208 (* LING 100 and 101 are not for credit  toward an Honours, Major or Minor in Speech Sciences.)
