Kathleen Currie Hall ‘Prof Talk’: Linguistics and Names

DATE
Thursday September 18, 2025
TIME
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

As part of a ‘Prof Talk’ series organized by the Compass Student Engagement Hub and aimed primarily at undergrads, Prof. Kathleen Currie Hall will host a conversation on linguistic issues surrounding the pronunciation of names. RSVP here. An abstract is below.

Many of us are aware these days that it’s important to pronounce people’s names correctly. We may be frustrated when others don’t pronounce our own names correctly, or feel flustered when we don’t immediately recognize or know how to pronounce someone else’s name (for example, when we’re meeting new classmates or working in a client-facing setting!).

Join Dr. Kathleen Currie Hall in a conversation to talk about just why it can be hard to handle a new name from a linguistic perspective, and what kinds of strategies you might use to avoid the awkwardness.
