BC) will give an LOC colloquium:</p><p><strong>Pitch in Mandarin: A double-
edged sword<br /></strong>Pitch serves an important function in Mandarin: t
he same syllable produced with different pitch contours results in distinct
words\, so Mandarin listeners have to track pitch in order to successfully
recognize words. However\, pitch has also been found to correlate with pho
nological voicing in stops cross-linguistically. For example\, in English\,
the pitch at vowel onset following a voiceless stop (e.g.\, /p/) tends to
be higher than that following a voiced stop (e.g.\, /b/). In this colloquiu
m\, I am going to share the results from my research looking at whether and
how Mandarin speakers navigate this dual function of pitch in their produc
 tion and perception.</p><p> </p>
