This award has been created thanks to a substantial contribution from Eric Vatikiotis-Bateson’s start-up funds and contributions from the Linguistics Department operating funds. This is a competitive award and we encourage students who receive it to place it on their CV.

The goal of this travel award is to support student visibility for employment opportunities. The requirements and restrictions reflect this goal. There will be three funding cycles per year. Applications will be due February 1, June 1, and October 1. UBC guidelines mandate that international travel planning (i.e., booking of flights, accommodations) should take place at least 21 days before the travel.

Travel eligibility for each application cycle:

  • Apply by February 1 for travel departing April 1 to July 31
  • Apply by June 1 for travel departing August 1 to November 30
  • Apply by October 1 for travel departing December 1 to March 31

There is a $5000 cap for each award. Eligible expenses must follow the UBC Policy 83: Travel and Related Expenses, UBC Expenditure Guidelines, and Faculty of Arts guidelines and may include:

  • Airfare
  • Conference Registration fee
  • Accommodations (Given the purpose of this award is to support student visibility, we anticipate the student will be staying in the conference hotel or one nearby to facilitate networking opportunities)
  • Any relevant travel visa costs
  • Per diem for meals not included in conference registration at current UBC rates ($14 for breakfast, $16 for lunch, $30 for dinner)
  • Local travel (public transit, taxi, shuttle to/from airport, etc.)
  • Mileage for travel in a personal vehicle ($0.49/km)
  • Poster printing

To apply, students must submit in an online form:

  1. A budget reflecting the travel expenses
  2. A brief description of the conference and its relevance for the student and their job prospects
  3. A letter from their supervisor justifying why this conference is the right choice for this student at this point in time (this must be submitted online, or emailed to ling.admin@ubc.ca by the application deadline)
  4. Evidence of a lack of other funding (in a demonstration of a lack of other funding, students must provide evidence or make an argument that their supervisor or other relevant faculty member does not have the means through research grants to provide financial support for the conference travel. This point should also be made by the supervisor in the supporting letter)

Decisions will be made within two weeks of each application deadline and will be made with the following priorities in mind:

  •  The committee will prioritize dissertation work.
  • The committee will prioritize students who are not on extension.
  • The committee will prioritize students who have not received the award previously.
  • Each student is eligible for a maximum of 2 of these awards in their graduate career. If a student is offered an award and must decline it for whatever reason, this will not count as having received an award.
