The Summer Camp Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and administrative functions of the Language Detectives Summer Camp offered by UBC Linguistics: https://recreation.ubc.ca/camps/summer/language-speaking-writing-language-detectives/
The goal of these camps is to engage children in language learning and explore other languages, as well as to introduce students to Linguistic concepts in fun and interactive ways.
Responsibilities
- Under the supervision/direction of the Student Programs Manager (M&P), coordinates all aspects of the “Language Detectives” summer camps, including:
- Marketing the camps to parents
- Development of camp curriculum and activities
- Assisting with recruiting and interviewing camp instructors (undergraduate student employees) and volunteers
- Day-to-day supervision of the camp instructors and volunteers
- Liaison with parents, the Department of Linguistics, and UBC Camps
- Participates in first aid training, orientation, planning meetings and/or other preparation activities
- Holds a valid criminal record check Standard First-Aid/CPR certification and provides proof of both to the Department of Linguistics prior to the commencement of the camps.
- Performs other duties as required
Qualifications
- Major/minor or completion of undergraduate degree in Linguistics, Speech Sciences or Cognitive Systems
- 2+ years’ experience working with children in group settings
- Able to take initiative
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Able to work independently and be an effective team player
- Able to problem-solve
- Able to develop new methods and procedures
Location
UBC – Totem Field Studios, 2613 West Mall
Term of Employment
- The term of employment will be from May 15 to September 1
- The position will be part-time (up to 20 hrs/wk) from May 15 to June 23
- Full-time hours (35 hr/wk) will be from June 26 to September 1
- The summer camps will run from July 4 to August 25 (8 weeks)
- Additional vacation may not be taken for the duration of the summer camps
