UBC Linguistics, past and present, outside the conference dinner
In May 2026, UBC Linguistics hosted a special joint meeting of SULA (Semantics of Under-represented Languages in the Americas) and TripleA (Semantics of Languages of Africa, Asia, Australia and Oceania). The event brought together researchers from around the globe who are working on languages and dialects which are under-represented in the literature on formal semantics, especially with an emphasis on primary fieldwork. The four day event included invited speakers from across the Americas, Africa and Europe. This meeting also marked the 25th anniversary of SULA, which was founded at UMass Amherst in 2001 by Angelika Kratzer and Lisa Matthewson.
The faculty organizers (Lisa Matthewson, Ryan Bochnak and Pat Moore) would like to thank everyone who made the event’s success possible — especially Starr Sandoval, Bailey Trotter, Sander Nederveen, Eva Csipak, Xue Sun, Mila Loginova, Ana Arrieta Zamudio, Kate Zhou, and a whole troupe of undergraduate students too.
