Every year as part of the MDS-Computational Linguistics’ COLX523 course, student groups each collect and annotate a corpus with some linguistic purpose, and then prepare videos to document their corpus dashboards and its workings to the class. In late March, they gather for an MDS-CL ‘Oscars’ party, to watch their videos and vote for the best.
This year’s projects included mechanisms for humour and foreshadowing in the TV show Friends, sentiment marking in Amazon reviews and song lyrics, and linguistic markers of fraud or misinformation in news headlines, social media and elsewhere.
