Information for Visiting Scholars

The UBC Linguistics Visiting Scholar Program

Involvement in department life

UBC provides a lively intellectual environment, and visitors are expected to participate fully in the life of the department. This includes attending department colloquia, participating in at least one advanced research seminar, and delivering one colloquium or research seminar per term.


The UBC Department of Linguistics provides visitors with office space (subject to availability), as well as access to library and internet services.

How To Apply


Generally, visitors stay for a minimum of one semester and a maximum of one year.

Visitor applications are due on March 15 for the following Fall semester and September 15 for the following Spring semester.


Applications include the following:

  • Statement of Purpose indicating
    (i) the goals of your stay
    (ii) the beginning and ending dates of your visit
    (iii) the faculty member(s) you would like to consult with during your stay
  • CV
  • Writing sample (one or two recent papers)

You will be informed of your application status shortly after the application deadlines. If your application is accepted, the Department will contact you with further details regarding your visit.
