Title
Benefits and Limitations of Cochlear Implants for Children
Abstract
Cochlear implants (CIs) are auditory prosthetics that provide partial hearing restoration to people with severe hearing loss. Children with congenital severe hearing loss generally receive CIs by 1-year of age and are, under ideal circumstances, able to achieve high levels of speech understanding and spoken language development. Despite these gains, there is considerable variability in outcomes and a continued need for communication enhancements. In this talk we will explore benefits of CIs for spoken language development in addition to benefits of communication enhancements such “clear speech” for children who use CIs and children who have typical hearing.
