| H_001 | 1 | In-Person | Seminar | M | 15:00 - 18:00 | Zhu, Jian | Public NotesThis course examines how large language models (LLMs) participate in social life: how they represent language, people, identities, communities, and communicative norms, and how humans interpret, adapt to, and contest these systems. The discussion-based seminar combines sociolinguistics, human-computer interaction, and interpretability/evaluation research in natural language processing, with an emphasis on empirical studies of model behaviors and human–LLM interactions. Students will learn to critically read recent papers, design small-scale studies, implement LLM-based systems, and develop research projects that investigate the social meanings, biases, affordances, and limitations of LLMs. |

| I_001 | 1 | In-Person | Seminar | T, Th | 09:30 - 11:00 | Bochnak, Ryan | Public NotesIn this seminar, we will take a look at phenomena that lie at the intersection of modality (talking about possibilities) and aspect (the temporal profile of events). Specifically, we will focus on actuality entailments (the inference from Starr was able to swim across the river to Starr swam across the river), non-culminating accomplishments (in many languages, saying Sander roasted the potatoes does not entail that any potatoes got roasted), and frustratives (the non-realisation of an expected outcome of an event). We will study these phenomena through the lens of recent theories that make crucial use of causes and forces in the semantic ontology. These innovations offer the promise of providing greater explanatory power for the semantics of success and thwarting, beyond but alongside the more familiar tools of possible worlds, events, situations, and the like. Students taking the seminar for credit will write a paper applying the tools of causation and forces to a phenomenon relevant to their own research interests. |

| J_002 | 2 | In-Person | Seminar | T, Th | 15:30 - 17:00 | Hammerly, Christopher | Public NotesUpon the introduction of Optimality Theory (OT) in the early 1990s, a significant body of work applied the theory to the domain of syntax, alongside progressions under the Minimalist framework. Today, OT is no longer in the mainstream of syntactic theory, despite continuing to dominate as a framework within phonology. With this backdrop, the goal of this course is first to understand OT Syntax on its own terms: How was it (and is it) applied as a theory of grammatical knowledge of syntax? The second goal is to draw out connections and comparisons between OT and more mainstream theories of syntax, put forward under the guise of Minimalism, particularly in the domains of case and agreement. The final goal is to show how OT provides a natural bridge between our formal theories of grammatical knowledge and the study of incremental sentence processing within psycholinguistics. |
