Teaching Assistant Positions: 2023-2024 Academic Year 

The Master of Data Science- Computational Linguistics invites UBC students to submit an application to work as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the upcoming academic year (September 2023 through August 2024). 

Please note that TAs must complete the work from within the province (BC) during the employment period – that is, even for an online course, TAs may not work from abroad. 

Duties include: 

  • Attending all course lectures. For an online course, this includes helping to manage chat/discussions/breakout rooms. 
  • Leading tutorials (for those courses with tutorials). 
  • Participating in training and orientation sessions. 
  • Facilitating small group activities and conversations. 
  • Marking assignments and assessments. 
  • Entering grades in Canvas. 
  • Proofreading materials and assignment instructions. 
  • Responding to student e-mails and questions in a timely manner. 
  • Meeting with the course instructor regularly; ensuring collegial and functional communication. 

Wage: 

Wage is determined by the student’s classification according to the CUPE 2278 Collective Agreement (https://hr.ubc.ca/working-ubc/salaries/staff-salaries-job-evaluation/staff-salary-scales ): 

  • Undergraduate students (UTA I classification) will receive $25.63/hour. 
  • Graduate students with less than two years’ service as a TA (GTA II classification) will receive $37.53/hour. 
  • Graduate students who have completed two years’ service as a GTA (GTA I classification) will receive $38.99/hour. 

 

MDS-CL courses (October to December 2023): 

Each MDS-CL course is held for 5 weeks, called a “block”. This TA appointment would be 12 hours of work per week (120 hours over the term) over 2 courses (one per block) under the direction of the course instructor(s). The appointment is referred to as a “cluster”.   

The TA appointment cluster consists of the following two courses: 

  • DSCI 512 Section 002 (In-person) – Oct 6, 2023 to Nov 09, 2023: Lectures Tu/Th 11:00am -12:30pm; Labs W 2:00pm-6:00pm (Led by a Lab Instructor); and    
  • COLX 521 Section 001 (In-person) – Nov 13, 2023 to Dec 13, 2023: Lectures MW 11:00am- 12:30pm; Labs M 2:00pm-6:00pm (Led by a Lab Instructor)
