Teaching Assistant Positions: 2025W Term 1 and Term 2

The Department of Linguistics invites UBC students to submit an application to work as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the upcoming academic year (September 2025 through April 2026).

Please note that TAs must complete the work from within the province (BC) during the employment period – that is, even for an online course, TAs may not work from abroad.

Duties may include:

  • Attending all course lectures. For an online course, this includes helping to manage chat/discussions/breakout rooms.
  • Leading tutorials (for those courses with tutorials).
  • Participating in training and orientation sessions.
  • Facilitating small group activities and conversations.
  • Marking assignments and assessments.
  • Entering grades in Canvas.
  • Proofreading materials and assignment instructions.
  • Responding to student e-mails and questions in a timely manner.
  • Meeting with the course instructor regularly; ensuring collegial and functional communication.

Wage:

Wage is determined by the student’s classification according to the CUPE 2278 Collective Agreement (https://www.cupe2278.ca/collective-agreement-basics):

  • Undergraduate students (UTA I classification) will receive $26.40/hour.
  • Graduate students with less than two years’ service as a TA (GTA II classification) will receive $38.65/hour.
  • Graduate students who have completed two years’ service as a GTA (GTA I classification) will receive $40.16/hour.
  • Graduate students who take on additional lead hand duties as a Senior Teaching Assistant (STA classification, i.e. coordinating other Teaching Assistants and providing guidance, technical knowledge, and subject matter expertise) will receive $42.95/hour.

 

Winter Term 1 (September to December 2025):

Winter Term 1 is 16 weeks long; TAs work 12 hours per week (192 hours total over the term) under the direction of the course instructor.

  • LING 100 Section 001 (in-person) – Lectures MW 11:00-12:00; Tutorials (led by TAs) on Fridays (2 TA-ships)
  • LING 313 Section 001 (in-person) – Lectures MWF 14:00-15:00; Labs (led by TAs) on Mondays & Wednesdays (2 TA-ships)

Winter Term 2 (January to April 2026):

Winter Term 2 is 16 weeks long; TAs work 12 hours per week (192 hours total over the term) under the direction of the course instructor.
