We are all invited to consider our role in climate change during the week of September 20–27, 2019. Friday, September 27 will be a particularly important day in this week, as it marks a worldwide strike. That day, millions of people worldwide will be striking from school and work to demand that the climate crisis be given the attention and resources it deserves.
UBC students, staff, and faculty are organizing an event to take place September 27 at 11 am in front of AMS Nest, with a bus and bike convoy afterwards to meet with other strikers at Vancouver City Hall (1–4 pm).
The Department of Linguistics fully supports this action and encourages students, staff, and faculty to participate. Global climate change affects people, biodiversity, and linguistic diversity. As linguists and as people, we are devoted to reducing our climate impact to protect the vulnerable and to empowering change.
Some instructors may have cancelled classes or made accommodations for students who are choosing to participate in this global call to action. If you have a class on Friday, please contact your instructor for details.
