We are excited to announce that this year’s winner of the Edna Dharmaratne Award (https://linguistics.ubc.ca/undergraduate/funding/the-edna-dharmaratne-award-in-linguistics) is Jess Tse, a 3rd-year student in Speech Sciences. The award is intended to recognize a student who not only has a good academic record but also has a commitment of volunteerism and service to others. Jess started volunteering well before coming to UBC, collecting leftover food from bakeries and cafés to distribute to those in need through an NGO, and also tutoring underprivileged students in both English and biology. Since coming to UBC, Jess has taken on service roles in the AMS Peer Support team, working to promote both gender-affirming care and safer substance use, and in the UBC Marching Band, serving as both treasurer and co-president and specifically working to develop a sense of community through mentorship. We applaud these efforts and are grateful to have Jess in our program!
Congratulations, Jess!
