Teaching

Research

My research and teaching interests focus mainly on understanding how the human body is used as a communication device. At the core of this embodied approach are the basic physical mechanisms of movement control and sensation, and their interactions with speech production, perception, phonology and phonetics in normal, disordered, and children’s speech, and across languages, including signed languages. More broadly, I am interested in how people interact with each other and their environment, and how this interaction can inform models of linguistic communication. Within this paradigm, some of my major research programs have focused on techniques for applying ultrasound imaging technology to speech research, protocols for studying haptic (tactile) and multimodal perception of speech, methods for observing aspects of speech motor behaviour such as planning and posture, and biomechanical simulation of speech (see www.artisynth.org).

Teaching
