Farewell to Dr. Jungyeul Park

In June 2025, the MDS Computational Linguistics program is saying goodbye to our lecturer Dr. Jungyeul Park. Jungyeul joined the MDS-CL program in 2021 with a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Université Paris Diderot (Paris VII). Over the past four years Jungyeul has played many roles: he taught LING 242: “Computational Tools for Linguistic Analysis”, as well as all of the program’s course labs; he developed computational linguistics curriculum; he has also published multiple papers on Korean morphology. In addition, Jungyeul has been a popular mentor for the program’s final Capstone projects.

As part of his farewell, the MDS-CL program presented Jungyeul with a book of thanks and appreciation from present and past MDS-CL members. The book’s contributions especially highlighted Jungyuel’s engaging teaching style, supportiveness, and the joy he brought to each class.

UBC Linguistics and the MDS-CL program wish Jungyeul all the very best!

“ You found a way to make very abstruse concepts extremely entertaining. Every lab that you taught and each group project that you mentored was full of infectious joy.”
“ Your attitude encouraged me and others many times throughout the semester showing us that we had all of the building blocks necessary, it was just a matter of putting them together in a thoughtful way to achieve lab goals. I truly would've had a much worse experience if not for all of your patience and enthusiasm.”
