Sav Nijeboer is our new manager of administration

Sav Nijeboer is our new manager of administration

The department has a new manager of administration, Sav Nijeboer. She has a BSc in Behavioural Neuroscience from UBC and was most recently the research manager in Janet Werker’s language acquisition lab, where many of us may already have met her through various Language Sciences initiatives. Her Scottish Terrier’s name is Finn.

The department will host the 37th annual Northwest Linguistics Conference from May 14-16, 2021. Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to submit abstracts for 30 minute talks or for presentation of a poster in any area of theoretical or applied linguistics. The invited speakers will be Miikka Silfverberg, Neda Todorović, and Samuel Akinbo.

New course on the languages of Africa

The department is offering a new survey course, LING 308: Languages of Africa. Students will study African languages and cultures from the ground up, including through inquisitive exploration in language projects.
